Join Missoula Children’s Theatre and 50 area children as they present PINOCCHIO.

Geppetto fashioned the puppet in the image of a small boy.  Even as the lonely and kind woodcarver worked far into the night, old Geppetto was not aware that the wood under the chisel had come from the trunk of an enchanted tree.  But the Blue Fairy was aware, as she watched from afar and gave to that puppet the gift of life.  Thus begins the Missoula Children’s Theatre adaptation of one of the most beloved of all children’s stories – PINOCCHIO.  Join our wooden-head as he dances with Geppetto’s charming toys, travels the road to Pleasure Isle with Candlewick and his Crew, and is swindled by the unsavory Fox and Cat.  After escaping the clutches of the evil puppetmaster, Stromboli, Pinocchio finds himself in trouble once more – this time swallowed by a monstrous whale. Very scary stuff! As Geppetto and the friendly Urchins spin their magical tale, we learn with Pinocchio that there are no shortcuts on the road to becoming a real, live boy.  This event is sponsored in part by CENTURYLINK and NEVA HODGE-LEMORANDE.

DNR Sports Report- Fishermen at the Stiles Dam down river to Holtwood Park were targeting small mouth bass using tube jigs, crank baits, and crawlers fished along current seams with some large fish being reported. Bay fishermen have been targeting walleye from the Pensaukee River to Oconto Park II, with catch rates being low for most boaters. Crawler/harness and stick baits be trolled in 12 to 20 feet of water are catching some walleye and drum. – Kevin King, creel clerk

Geano Beach had moderate fishing activity for the week with anglers targeting Walleye. The main baits used were spinners with worms, crawler harnesses (green and gold), and crank baits. Fishermen were fishing in about 20 to 25 feet of water with not having very high numbers. Average ranges were from about 17 inches to 25 inches. Sheepshead were also caught, but all were released.

“Bark For Life” walk to benefit the American Cancer Society

On Saturday, June 22, Hometown Veterinary Clinic in Oconto Falls will host a “Bark For Life” walk to benefit the American Cancer Society and their search for a cancer cure.

This one mile or 2.5 mile walk for people and their canine companions will begin at 9:00 am at Hometown Veterinary Clinic, 180 E Highland Drive.

Participants will receive a gift bag and t-shirt as well as a bandana for their canine walking partner(s). All participants are encouraged to bring their dogs and families. Food will be provided after the walk. The cost is $25 per person in advance or $30 after June 14th. Registration on the day of the walk begins at 8:00 am.

Bark For Life honors the care giving qualities of our canine companions and caregivers. It presents an opportunity for people to be empowered through their canine companion partnerships and to contribute to cancer cures through the mission of the American Cancer Society. Participants come together to celebrate cancer survivorship, to honor people lost to cancer, to fundraise in support of cancer research, education, awareness, patient services, advocacy, and to help eliminate the suffering that cancer causes worldwide.

Spring is here! It’s time to enjoy the great outdoor in Northeast Wisconsin. The preparation has started in anticipation of warm weather activities, such as fishing, swimming and boating on the Oconto River. The Oconto Falls Area Chamber of Commerce is ready to help create some excitement in the community with a few projects this year.

The Flag Project has begun. Letters will be sent out this week. Donations of $75 will sponsor a 3X5 American Flag, Pole and Bracket. The addition of American flags on streets of Main, Union, Chestnut, Highland, Maple and Green Bay will help decorate our city.

 

 

 

 

The Boat Raffle will begin at our membership meeting on Thursday May 16th at 12 pm at Oconto Falls City Hall. The proceeds from the raffle will go toward beautification and new welcome signs for the city.

 

 

 

 

•    Relationship development with the cities of Oconto Falls, Oconto, their surrounding areas and Oconto County is a great foundation for economic stability. Working together has begun with the Highway 22 project planning in Oconto Falls, shared events (golf outing with the Oconto Chamber), and the speaker for our meeting Paul Ehrfurth from OCEDC will give us some insight on the development of the county.

•    Updates to our welcome packets, by-laws, website and Facebook account are in progress or complete. Please check the website, read the meeting minutes and attend the meetings to receive information or to share your thoughts and ideas.

I encourage all members to promote the area and all it has to offer.

Area Hunting and Fishing Report

Turkey hunters are reporting better success as turkeys are in more normal patterns in the area. Fishing on Green Bay is heating up for walleyes with limits reported out of Oconto County North Bayshore Recreation Area and Pensaukee. Fishermen are reminded yellow perch is still closed on Green Bay until May 20. Oconto County ATV trails open May 10. – Mike Stahl, conservation warden, Oconto Falls

Catch rates for walleye and northern pike at the Stiles Dam were low due in part to high water and the sucker run. Anglers out of Oconto Breakwater and Oconto Park II were mainly fishing for walleye and trolling was the most effective method using stick baits or crawler/harness in 4 to 8 feet of water. A few smallmouth bass and northern pike were also reported being caught. Boaters were reporting a water temperature on the Bay from the upper 30’s to the low 40’s. Shore fishermen at Oconto Breakwater are catching a few northern pike using large shiner minnows or dead smelt fished on bottom. Some walleye are being by shore anglers at the Municipal Landing, casting crank baits and stick baits. – David Boyarski, fisheries supervisor, Sturgeon Bay

Oconto Falls has seven students advancing onto the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California.

Oconto Falls High School is fortunate to have seven students who will be advancing onto the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. These seven students will be attending the National Leadership Conference (NLC) that compiles over 9,000+ students from around the nation. In order to qualify for the National Leadership Conference, it takes an immense amount of hard work and dedication. Students need to compete and place in the top 2 of their event at the Regional Leadership Conference, as well as the State Leadership Conference. Beyond the conferences, OFHS FBLA requires additional practices and even a local competition to get the students ready and more prepared for their events.

The seven students who qualified for OFHS-FBLA are Candis Dequaine, Jessica Belongia, & Elizabeth Coopman in Partnership with Business, Jacob Vervelde in Cyber Security, and Brittany Russell, Mikaela Thomson, & Liza Leja in Business Ethics. While in Anaheim, California, these 7 students will be attending various workshops and networking in order to further develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. They also hope to visit various attractions and tour the city.

However, in order for the students to fully enjoy this experience that they earned, they are in need of monetary help to attend the conference. Costs to attend the conference are estimated at $1500.00 per person. NWTC Career Services has recently added new services to its already comprehensive list of recruitment strategies employers can use to attract new employees.  As always, employers can post jobs and internships via Wisconsin Tech Connect, a free online system for connection all of the Wisconsin Technical College System students and graduates with full and part time jobs and internships.  Employers can also staff a table on any campus to collect applications, and schedule interviews.
