Re-Opening of the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

Mountain look out towerRe-Opening of the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower

Mountain, June 10, 2016: We are pleased to invite you to a re-opening ceremony of the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower on the Lakewood Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The ceremony will be held at 10a.m. Friday, June 10, 2016. The ceremony will take place at the tower approximately two and one-half miles north of Mountain, Wisconsin off of Old 32 (Forest Road 2106). We are planning to serve snacks and refreshments immediately after the ceremony at the Schoolhouse Bar (14007 WI-32) in Mountain.

The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was built in 1935 by the U.S. Forest Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was once a part of an extensive lookout tower network in the former Nicolet National Forest. The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was the first tower in Wisconsin to be placed on the National Historic Lookout Register and the National Register of Historic Places. It also was the 41stlookout tower to be registered in the United States. The tower was taken out of service in 1970 and was last restored in 1994.The Mountain Fire Lookout Tower was restored in 2015-2016 through a partnership between the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest with financial assistance from the Oconto County Economic Development Corporation, numerous local businesses, organizations, communities and residents. Employees from the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District spent more than 500 hours doing the restoration work.

“This was a great partnership and community effort,” said Greyling Brandt, Recreation Program Manager on the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District. “Together we were able to restore the tower and now can open it to visitors again to get an up close look at a piece of Wisconsin’s history.”

Today, the 100-foot steel tower with a 7-by-7 foot cab is one of the few remaining lookouts on the east side of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

The tower will be open to the public starting Memorial Day Weekend.

We sincerely hope that you plan to attend this ceremony. Please RSVP to tourism@ocontocounty.org or call 920-834-6969. We can also help provide information on area accommodations if needed.

FAQ’s:

Do I need to “RUN” in this event?
Absolutely NOT! You can walk, jog, skip or even crawl through this fantastic event! You can even push your kids in their strollers through the course!

What does a “Team” consist of?
A team consists of a minimum of 4 members – no limit to the maximium. You can create your own Team Name!Prizes will be awarded to certain teams for things such as best costumes, most creative team name, most team members! So come with your friends and family, dress as silly as you like and have a good time!

What is the Color Celebration at the end?
Each participant receives a color packet. Once everyone has crossed the finish line we will have an announcement and everyone will open their packets and throw their colors up in the air at the same time – causing a most beautiful powder rainbow unlike anything you’ve ever seen!

Will the powder ruin my clothes or shoes or car interior?
Most of the color does come out once it’s washed. The sooner you wash it the better! Some color may not come out 100% – so we suggest to wear clothing you don’t mind getting COLORFUL! We also suggest a change of clothes or a towel or two to wear in your vehicle.

Will the colored powder affect my breathing or my vision?
The powder is non-toxic and primarily made up of cornstarch. We do tell our “color throwers” to not aim at the face and some runners have been known to wear some type of goggles or eye wear. Some use bandanas or their shirts to cover their mouths.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
No requirements as there is no age limit!

Abrams Theatre Presents “Shrek The Musical”

shrekAbrams Spotlight Productions, Inc. will present, Shrek The Musical (Music by Jeanine Tesori, Book & Lyrics By David Lindsay-Abaire, Based on the DreamWorks Animation Motion Picture and the book by William Steig) April 15, 2016 – April 24, 2016 at The Byng Community Theater in Abrams.

Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek The Musical is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure featuring all new songs from Jeanine Tesori (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline or Change) and a sidesplitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage, and proves there’s more to the story than meets the ears. “Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek…” And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand…and his name is Shrek.

Opening night is Friday, April 15 at 7:00pm. Abrams Spotlight Productions, Inc. will be celebrating by having an Opening Night Gala. Patrons that attend opening night will receive complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks after the show (with the cast and crew).

Subsequent show dates are as follows:
