STEINWAY CENTERSTAGE XII concert

SteinwayThe Oconto Falls School District is proud to present the STEINWAY CENTERSTAGE XII concert on Saturday, May 9 in the Falls Area Performing Arts Center.  The performance will begin at 3:00 p.m.  This year’s featured students will be from the piano studios of Joan Johnson, Carol Ann Lemke, and Grace Skaletski.  Student performers include Grace Jahnke, Elisabeth Jeske, Gabrielle Jeske, Kerstin Jeske, Helen Marquardt, Peyton Woelffer, Jacob Woulf, and Nathan Woulf.

michael rectorThis year’s guest artist will be Dr. Michael Rector, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay.  Dr. Rector has earned degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Maryland, Vancouver Academy of Music, and Oberlin College.  He is committed to making the language of classical music vivid for people of all ages and backgrounds. As a pianist, he invigorates and expands the repertoire through innovative programming that re-contextualizes familiar pieces and makes vivid new and neglected works. His repertoire ranges from Haydn to Harbison and from Couperin to Carter. He is also a dedicated teacher, researcher and advocate for the arts.

Dr. Rector has performed in fifteen American states and two Canadian provinces in venues like Steinway Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater in Washington, DC. He has performed in music festivals in Italy and Russia. He competes frequently in international contests, and is a prize-winner of the Jacob Flier Competition in New York.   In 2012, Dr. Rector and his wife, pianist Sylvia Hong, formed Duo Affannato. They have since toured extensively in the United States and Korea. At the 2013 NFMC Ellis Duo Competition, he and his wife won the 2nd prize and Abild award for the best performance of American music. In April 2014, they toured in Eastern Europe, performing concertos with the Georgian Sinfonietta and Black Sea Symphony. Their most recent project together is a crowd-funded commission of music for two pianos that depicts concepts in science through music – Jonathan Kolm’s Creation of Discovery, intended for both concert presentation and outreach to schools and the scientific community.

Dr. Rector holds his doctoral degree from Manhattan School of Music. For the dissertation, he investigated Chopin’s harmonic practice as influenced by the music of Louis Spohr and Romantic philosophy. He also earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, where he majored in comparative literature. Michael enjoys presenting lecture-recitals and master classes both at home and abroad. His most recent article “Fascinating Corruptions-Historical Editions in Perspective” was published in the February 2014 issue of American Music Teacher.

The Steinway Centerstage concert is free and open to the public.  Donations are accepted at the door.

Auditions for “The Game’s Afoot”

Games afootAbrams Spotlight Productions, Inc. will holding open auditions for their next play, The Game’s Afoot or Holmes for the Holidays (Book by Ken Ludwig) on May 6 & 7, 2015 – 6:00pm-8:00pm at The Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple Street, Abrams.

It is December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry.  But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous.  Then it’s up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears.  The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays.

Actors age 15 and older are welcome to audition.  The audition will consist of cold readings from the script.  You must audition in order to be in the show, no late entries will be allowed.  Rehearsals will generally be on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning in May.  Show dates are scheduled for August 14-16 & 21-23, 2015.  Please consider your availability for all rehearsals and show dates, and your level of commitment before auditioning.  We are always looking for Backstage and Front of House Crew Members as well.  For more information call Brandon Byng at (920) 826-5852.

DISTRICT SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL ON MARCH 14 AT OCONTO FALLS HIGH SCHOOL

photoStudents from several area schools will be participating in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo & Ensemble Music Festival hosted at Oconto Falls High School on Saturday, March 14, 2015. During the festival, which is free and open to the public, students will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator.

WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival will draw students from a number of area schools, including Oconto Falls High School, Oconto High School, Marinette High School, Washington Middle School-Oconto Falls, Oconto Middle School, and Marinette Middle School. Amy Thiel, choral director from Oconto Falls High School, and Mike Marciniak, band director from Oconto High School will be serving as the festival managers.

“WSMA enjoys a long tradition of providing quality music education experiences to over 100,000 students annually. Festivals provide students with an opportunity to enrich their musical abilities and understandings as they perform and receive feedback from qualified adjudicators, and as they observe and listen to the performances of their peers,” said WSMA Executive Director Timothy Schaid.

WSMA music festivals support school music programs as part of a comprehensive education by encouraging the study of quality music literature; motivating students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities; improving students’ understanding of music literature and concepts (performance through understanding) and providing a performance assessment to improve individual and group achievement.
