DNR Sports Report

DNR Sports Report- Fishermen at the Stiles Dam down river to Holtwood Park were targeting small mouth bass using tube jigs, crank baits, and crawlers fished along current seams with some large fish being reported. Bay fishermen have been targeting walleye from the Pensaukee River to Oconto Park II, with catch rates being low for most boaters. Crawler/harness and stick baits be trolled in 12 to 20 feet of water are catching some walleye and drum. – Kevin King, creel clerk

Geano Beach had moderate fishing activity for the week with anglers targeting Walleye. The main baits used were spinners with worms, crawler harnesses (green and gold), and crank baits. Fishermen were fishing in about 20 to 25 feet of water with not having very high numbers. Average ranges were from about 17 inches to 25 inches. Sheepshead were also caught, but all were released.

Area Hunting and Fishing Report

Turkey hunters are reporting better success as turkeys are in more normal patterns in the area. Fishing on Green Bay is heating up for walleyes with limits reported out of Oconto County North Bayshore Recreation Area and Pensaukee. Fishermen are reminded yellow perch is still closed on Green Bay until May 20. Oconto County ATV trails open May 10. – Mike Stahl, conservation warden, Oconto Falls

Catch rates for walleye and northern pike at the Stiles Dam were low due in part to high water and the sucker run. Anglers out of Oconto Breakwater and Oconto Park II were mainly fishing for walleye and trolling was the most effective method using stick baits or crawler/harness in 4 to 8 feet of water. A few smallmouth bass and northern pike were also reported being caught. Boaters were reporting a water temperature on the Bay from the upper 30’s to the low 40’s. Shore fishermen at Oconto Breakwater are catching a few northern pike using large shiner minnows or dead smelt fished on bottom. Some walleye are being by shore anglers at the Municipal Landing, casting crank baits and stick baits. – David Boyarski, fisheries supervisor, Sturgeon Bay

Oconto Falls has seven students advancing onto the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California.

Oconto Falls High School is fortunate to have seven students who will be advancing onto the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California. These seven students will be attending the National Leadership Conference (NLC) that compiles over 9,000+ students from around the nation. In order to qualify for the National Leadership Conference, it takes an immense amount of hard work and dedication. Students need to compete and place in the top 2 of their event at the Regional Leadership Conference, as well as the State Leadership Conference. Beyond the conferences, OFHS FBLA requires additional practices and even a local competition to get the students ready and more prepared for their events.

The seven students who qualified for OFHS-FBLA are Candis Dequaine, Jessica Belongia, & Elizabeth Coopman in Partnership with Business, Jacob Vervelde in Cyber Security, and Brittany Russell, Mikaela Thomson, & Liza Leja in Business Ethics. While in Anaheim, California, these 7 students will be attending various workshops and networking in order to further develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. They also hope to visit various attractions and tour the city.

However, in order for the students to fully enjoy this experience that they earned, they are in need of monetary help to attend the conference. Costs to attend the conference are estimated at $1500.00 per person. If you or your business is willing to help support OFHS-FBLA in competing at the National Leadership Conference, see the contact information below. All donations are tax-deductible. Lions Promote Fish Habitat

Lion Jim Damp stands with a smile of pride and satisfaction as he thinks back to the progress made on the effort to enhance the habit for fish in the Oconto River. In the background are four of the cribs.

The Oconto Falls Lions were waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate in the latest phase of their project to improve the fish habitat on the Oconto River above the dam in Oconto Falls.  The dream of improving this valuable recreational resource began over a year ago.  The first phase was implemented last April with the stocking nearly 6,000 perch fingerlings a few miles upstream from the dam.  The second phase, which was finished last fall, involved the installation of a year around handicap accessible fishing dock just upstream from the East Side Beach in Oconto Falls.  The latest phase involved the designing, construction, and placement of over a dozen fish cribs in strategic locations.

The entire project involved working hand in hand with the Wisconsin DNR to obtain the necessary permits to ensure that these efforts complied with all appropriate regulations.  Lion Jim Damp shepherded the project as a goal in his final year as club president.  He calculated that over 700 man hours were involved in the project through the three phases.

He noted that “None of this could have happened without a number of partners in this effort.”  Among those partners were Gillett Cement donating 800 cement blocks; McDermid Transportation providing pallets and banding; OFHS Ag Department for construction of the cribs; local property owners who agreed to placement of the cribs beyond their shoreline; Luisier Drilling Inc. for donation of a pump at the dock, Hillberg Electric for installation power for the pump; City of Oconto Falls for access and a number of other enhancements; Fischer Concrete for the slab leading to the dock, Bear Magnin for transportation and placement of the cribs; Admax for signage; and financial contributions from ST Paper, Snow Jokers, and community members who purchased raffle tickets.  There is a long list of others who helped with the project that go unnamed.

The club has a permit for construction and placement of additional cribs.  It is hoped that can happen next year.  The club was proud to be part of this community effort to provide additional recreational opportunities on the river.

It was a team effort as several Lions club members put finishing touches on the cribs. Placement was such that there would be a minimum of fourteen feet of water to the bottom of the riverbed. The background shows a few of the homes where owners gave permission for the placement.
This provides a close up view of the construction of the cribs. It was critical that the cribs be weighted down so that they would not move once they settled through the ice. The use of Christmas tree branches would provide protection for the perch fry and other fish once they hatched. The design was such that they would settle in upright because of less weight at the top of the crib.

Community Healthcare Foundation announced its Celebrating Ordinary Heroes selections.

Community Healthcare Foundation announced its Celebrating Ordinary Heroes selections. Five Ordinary Heroes from throughoutOconto County have been chosen and will be recognized at the 8thannual Community Healthcare Foundation Spring Fling Wine, Cheese & Beer Tasting.
Ron Christensen of Suring was nominated for his commitment to promoting patriotism and making people aware of the veterans who have served and soldiers still serving our country. He orchestrates the Military Night for Veterans at the Suring-Lena basketball game. The event has become an annual night to recognize local soldiers and veterans and includes speakers and programs to educate the community about their service, traditions, and sacrifices. December’s event helped raise $2,445 for injured Marines.
A U.S. Marine veteran, Christensen has also orchestrated a Flag Day program at Woodland Village Nursing Home in Suring, where he serves as director. He is an active member of the American Legion, providing military funeral honors to those who have served. His son is currently serving in the military. He is a volunteer with the Suring High School basketball team. He makes sure the team visits the elderly and has taken them to visit a veterans home. His whole family is active in the community.
The Gillett Area Ambulance Service was nominated for their ongoing community service for almost 55 years. The non-profit ambulance service is run by volunteers and covers 220 square miles fromAnderson Lake in Mountain south to Krakow. Its 38 members are dedicated to serving the people of the area.
“We are here when the public needs help,” said Julie Yonker, squad director. First responder/EMTs are continually upgrading their training through refresher classes, seminars, and training sessions. The group maintains three fully equipped ambulances at their Gillett and Suring stations as well as a rescue sled and an all-season ATV. The service averages 400 to 450 calls per year and logs 26,280 on-call hours annually.
Pat Thomson of Oconto Falls was nominated for her volunteer efforts at MeadowLands Assisted Living. Her service began when her mother resided there and she would visit every day and visit with the residents she met in the hallways, dining room, or even reaching out to them in their apartments. It was not unusual to see her with flowers to brighten a resident’s day or as a gift from her and her mom for a birthday. Her mom has since passed on, but the residents of MeadowLands have not been forgotten. She comes every day that she can make it, which is usually five to six days a week. Her other priority is spending time with family at school events or having them over for a meal. She also works diligently for the United Methodist Church of Oconto Falls as a secretary.
She comes to the assisted living center to help serve meals at the supper hour. She creates conversation amongst the residents, remembers their birthdays, pays them compliments, and calls them by name. She makes and shares homemade treats, including her special hot fudge for the annual ice cream social. Her smiles and personality are so appreciated by the residents and staff. For the time she spends with them, they recognize her as an Ordinary Hero.
Carla Van Camp of Townsend was nominated for her 32 years of volunteer service with the Townsend-Lakewood rescue squad. One notable aspect of her service is that she owns and operates Karla’s Kountry Kitchen, which is mostly a one person operation. When her rescue pager goes off, she flips the “open” sign to “closed,” and asks her customers to leave payment on the counter and the last person out to lock the door. That means that her volunteer service results in a loss of income for the day.
Running her café, Van Camp is the hub of the community. Many of her customers are well into their retirement years. If one of her regulars is not at the counter for breakfast, she calls or drives to check on them. If someone’s car breaks down, she has one to lend. If someone is going to visit a friend in a nursing home, she has soup to send. She is forever cooking or working for local organizations or helping individuals in need. She also funds a scholarship in honor of her deceased husband. She has been referred to as “a treasure living in Townsend.”
Joyce Vizelka of Oconto Falls was nominated for her community service with Home Respite Care and Grace Lutheran Church. She has been active with Home Respite Care since it was started in 1993. She became a member of its board of directors in 1998, and has been its president for the past six years. Every year she takes the lead role in organizing the major fundraiser for the organization, “Taste of Oconto County.” She collects donations from businesses throughout Northeastern Wisconsin and organizes the auction and raffles. She personally contributes a lot of time and items for this fundraiser.
She has been a volunteer for many families in the Oconto Falls area who have needed assistance and relief while caring for a loved one. She has also given a lot of time and effort to activities through GraceLutheran Church. She has organized funeral dinners and has been active in a sewing group making quilts for people in need.
“We celebrate these everyday heroes who go out of their way to make a difference,” said Nancy Williquette, Community Healthcare Foundation Director. The Heroes will be honored at the foundation’s Spring Fling Wine, Beer and Cheese Tasting Friday, April 5th, 6:00 p.m. at Red Maple Country Club in Suring.
