Students from several area schools will be participating in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo & Ensemble Music Festival hosted at Oconto Falls High School on Saturday, March 14, 2015. During the festival, which is free and open to the public, students will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator.

WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival will draw students from a number of area schools, including Oconto Falls High School, Oconto High School, Marinette High School, Washington Middle School-Oconto Falls, Oconto Middle School, and Marinette Middle School. Amy Thiel, choral director from Oconto Falls High School, and Mike Marciniak, band director from Oconto High School will be serving as the festival managers.

“WSMA enjoys a long tradition of providing quality music education experiences to over 100,000 students annually. Festivals provide students with an opportunity to enrich their musical abilities and understandings as they perform and receive feedback from qualified adjudicators, and as they observe and listen to the performances of their peers,” said WSMA Executive Director Timothy Schaid.

WSMA music festivals support school music programs as part of a comprehensive education by encouraging the study of quality music literature; motivating students to prepare and perform to the best of their abilities; improving students’ understanding of music literature and concepts (performance through understanding) and providing a performance assessment to improve individual and group achievement.

Abrams Spotlight Productions, Inc. will present, Nunsense (Book, Music & Lyrics by, Dan Goggin) April 10, 2015 – April 19, 2015 at The Byng Community Theater in Abrams.

Nunsense begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters. In dire need of funds for the burials, the sisters decide to raise the money by putting on a variety show. So the sisters take over Mt. Saint Helen’s school auditorium, which is currently set up for the school’s production of “Grease”. Come meet Reverend Mother Mary Regina (Brandon Byng); Sister Mary Hubert (Kari Devine), the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne (Elizabeth Zitny); Sister Mary Leo (Ali Carlson), a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia (Karen Fuller). Featuring star turns, tap dancing and ballet, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has delighted audiences with more than 5000 productions worldwide and has been translated into 21 languages.

Opening night is Friday, April 10 at 7:00pm. Abrams Spotlight Productions, Inc. will be celebrating by having an Opening Night Gala. Patrons that attend opening night will receive complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks after the show (with the cast and crew).

Performances are at The Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple Street, Abrams. Tickets are $12.00 for Adults (18-64), $10.00 for Seniors (65+) and Youth (5-17), and $5.00 for Children (4 and under).

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable types of cancer, yet it remains the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital is using the month of March, dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness, to urge men and women to schedule their routine colonoscopies.

Colon cancer often begins as a non-cancerous growth. A colonoscopy can help doctors detect those growths long before they could develop into cancer.

Medical experts recommend everyone age 50 and older have a routine colonoscopy every 10 years to identify and remove precancerous growths. However, people who are at a higher risk for colon cancer or have a family history of the disease should consider scheduling colonoscopies earlier and more frequently, based on the recommendations of their doctor.

HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital providers and staff will commemorate Colon Cancer Awareness Month by taking part in National Dress in Blue Day on Friday, March 6, 2015.

The Craft and Vendor show has over 35 local vendors and crafters. The crafters are featuring everything from homemade quilts, sweater mittens, woodworking to jewelry. The vendors include Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, Essential Oils, Wildtree, Miche bags, It Works!, Jamberry Nails, and many, many more!
